Creation of a Swiss Collaborative Network for Non-communicable Diseases in collaboration with the Global South
Background
Globally, non-communicable diseases (NCD), which include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, represent the largest burden of morbidity and mortality. The burden is further magnified during humanitarian emergencies. These diseases are often the consequence of environmental, economic and social determinants. They require adapted health systems responses in every national and local setting, taking into consideration the local socio-economic and geographical context, to prevent and identify the disease and to treat and follow-up individuals.
Objective
The SCNNCD will build on existing partnerships to develop research and to compile experience in the area of NCDs addressing the full spectrum of issues from identifying the determinants of disease to the delivery of care.
Expected Benefits
- In target country: The goal of this project is to improve the health and wellbeing of the populations in the targeted countries. Beyond this research, capacity development and stronger partnerships will also result from the SCNNCD.
- In Switzerland: We aspire to grow the collaborative network as a platform for research and practice exchange on the issue of NCDs, contributing to addressing a global challenge and increasing visibility of Switzerland. The creation of a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral network encompassing areas for which Switzerland is renowned (i.e. nutrition, medicines, innovative financing, technological innovation, engineering) will further increase capacity to the Swiss response to NCDs through lessons learnt from Swiss and Southern partners (reverse innovation).
