Background

There is a disproportionately low number of skilled scientists and research clinicians in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) relative to the very high disease burden in these countries. Africa, for instance, accounts for 15% of the global population and 25% of the global disease burden, yet only produces about 2% of the world’s research output. The proportion of researchers in the African population is 25 times lower than the proportion in the United Kingdom and less than 10% of research publications are produced in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, healthcare interventions for LMICs tend to be researched and optimized in high-income countries, with potential for poorer outcomes when used in LMIC patients. That means to be off target and miss impact. This situation will continue and even worsen unless there are substantial and sustained human capital and infrastructure investments to improve the capability of local scientists in the field of basic and clinical research including translational medicine.

Objective

Increase the skills of scientists, with priority to PhD students, in LMIC’s while providing an opportunity for the Swiss hosts to obtain perspectives on healthcare challenges in LMICs.

Expected Benefits

  • In partner countries: The mutual learning opportunities created may contribute to long-term improvement of the health of disadvantaged communities in LMIC’s. An increase in scientific healthcare research will drive locally relevant solutions and improve outcomes for patients. Innovation results may also have impact on the solution of global health issues.
  • In Switzerland: Research sites in Switzerland will gain local healthcare insights directly from front-line researchers. The resultant research output will showcase Switzerland’s leadership role in science-based innovation. In the medium term, solutions emanating from these partnerships will have healthcare relevance in Switzerland, and indeed globally due to business opportunities and entrepreneurial engagement on both sides. Skills-based mentoring programs are associated with high employee engagement and talent retention, an important benefit for the hosting institutions and for strengthening capacity and global Swiss partnership.
